Tidal ~ Signal II
Tidal ~ Signal is a festival of exploratory music, sound, and new media taking place on Unceded Coast Salish Territories (Vancouver, BC). The event aims to be inclusive, accessible and anti-elitist, and features a diverse array of musics encompassing noise, ambient, electronic, drone, experimental techno, improvised, sound and performance art. As organizers, we operate from a core set of anticolonial feminist ethics, and seek to disrupt patterns of gender disparity in music programming of all genres. Our aesthetic mandate is reflective of this, with a particular focus on highlighting women, transgender, genderqueer and intergender artists working in left-field genres.
This year's event is presented in partnership with Quiet City.
LIVE PERFORMANCES //
gran am is an interdisciplinary artist based on the unceded territory of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations. She combines aural and visual mediums to create improvised, experimental performances which are motivated by themes of idealized femininity, and normalized oppression.
Sabrina Schroeder writes music for mixed ensembles, often using transducers and self-built mechanics as integrated instruments in live performance. Shes been an active member of composer-performer collectives presenting scored and improvised music, a back-up-band coordinator for teens in mental health housing, and works collaboratively in a range of interdisciplinary settings.
Sasha Mannequin makes club music that tells stories about displacement, paranoia and survival. She works with modular synthesis, programed drums, snippits of sampled conversations, and her own voice to create her songs, which take cues from synthpop, techno, grime, jungle and more. Her latest album, (((echoes))) is about fractured connection with jewishness, focusing on telling the stories of jewish socialist history through recontectualized Yiddish songs, and reacting to the reinvigorated anti semetic far-right. Sasha also plays with band Crazy Bitch Separatist, who make pop anthems for survivors, dissociated ravers, and of course, our beloved Crazy Bitches. Expect Qwerty keyboard mashing, synth gurgles and maybe a heartfelt ballad or two from her second-ever solo set, which she is thrilled to preform at this year's Tidal ~ Signal.
REAL ADULT (NYC)
You know how in The Charlie Brown and Snoopy show when the teachers talk to them but all they hear is a trombone with a plunger mute? That's what everything in the world sounds like to me. Nevertheless, it's a privilege to be selected to pound the erasers.
With reverence for female mythological figures, Wallgrin delves into the space between extremes of beauty and dissonance, expressed through layers of strings and exploratory human vocals. Self-produced recorded material incorporates a variety of eclectic instruments, drum machines, and field recordings, while live performances consist mainly of violin and vocal electronic manipulation. Wallgrin is now working on a debut album entitled Bird/Alien, due for release in 2018.
